Herpetology is the science of reptiles and amphibians. Professional herpetologists study their systematics, natural history and behavior. Most are employed by universities and other educational institutions, while others may work for governmental agencies or zoos. There are also a number of individuals who practice herpetology without being paid to do so. Much of their work is in biogeography: recording where species reside.
